For the first time ever, CBS’ long-running reality show Survivor was forced to remove a contestant due to inappropriate behavior.
Less than a month after contestant Kellee Kim alerted the staff about Dan Spilo‘s insensitive actions, he was removed from the show without explanation. After the conclusion of the episode, a message popped up,
“Dan was removed from the game after a report of another incident, which happened off-camera and did not involve a player.”
The show’s producers issued a number of warnings to Spilo, and he refused to heed them. Despite his actions, Spilo offered this apology,
“I work in an industry in which the #MeToo movement was formed and allowed – thank God – to blossom and become powerful and strong. My personal feeling is if anyone ever felt for a second uncomfortable about anything I’ve ever done, I’m horrified about that and I’m terribly sorry.”
Kim took to Twitter to respond to Spilo’s removal, tweeting,
“Hi, everyone. I’m hurting and very sad watching this last episode too, but please try to be kind and understanding. No one deserves treats or shaming, and we can talk about this in a way that we are all better for it. #Survivor #Mentalhealth”
