On his way to a record-setting victory, teenage Olympic runner Jacob Kiplimo celebrated too soon. Kibiwott Kandie took full advantage, passing him just before the finish line.
At the 95th San Silvestre de Sao Paulo Raod Race in Brazil, the Uganda-born Kiplimo flew past his competition for a majority of the 9.3-mile race. As he approached the finish line, he threw his hands up in celebratory relief, but Kandie lurked immediately behind him.
Kandie edged out Kiplimo by inches, winning the race and breaking a record, which should’ve belonged to Kiplimo, in the process.
Paul Tergat previously held the record with a 15-kilometer race time of slightly over 43 minutes.
Kiplimo finished the race with a time of 43 minutes exactly, while Kandie became the first runner to finish sub-43 minutes with a time of 42 minutes and 59 seconds.
Kiplimo should learn from this mistake, and he has a bright future ahead of him. In 2017, he won the IAAF World Cross Country Junior championship, and in 2019, he earned a silver medal at the World Cross Country at only 18 years of age.
