After only two years, Paramount is planning a total reboot of the popular superhero franchise Power Rangers. Currently, Jonathan Entwistle of The End of the F***ing World is being considered as lead director.
The new film is expected to have a time-traveling sequence in which the main characters are transported back to the 1990s. Patrick Burleigh, who wrote Peter Rabbit 2, is currently working on the script.
In 2017, Dean Israelite directed Power Rangers, and the critics were unimpressed. The Tomatometer gave the film a 51%, and the general consensus reads,
“Power Rangers has neither the campy fun of its TV predecessor nor the blockbuster action of its cinematic superhero competitors, and sadly never quite manages to shift into turbo for some good old-fashioned morphin’ time.”
However, the Power Rangers TV franchise is doing just fine. Beast Morphers, the franchise’s 26th season, aired this year on Nickelodeon.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe making over $4 billion in 2018, rebooting a popular superhero film with the correct director and funding could be a profitable move for Paramount.
